Autumn Berry Inspired

The one where I launched a startup...

Due to my weird ways of handling boredom and secret nerdy tendencies, I enrolled in two 400 level technology entrepreneurship courses in the College of Engineering this semester.  One day after class, I was convincing my professor to enroll me in the course (because I am not an engineer) when I was introduced to the nifty founder of Autumn Berry Inspired and learned about his company that he's been working on for the past few months.  I was beyond intrigued so we grabbed coffee, chatted for a few hours, and with the help of my natural charisma and charm, I was invited to join the venture as the third member of the executive team.

I am now working on this UIUC startup, Autumn Berry Inspired with my classmate and his wife, harvesting an invasive tree that produces a new super-food that hasn’t hit the market yet, the Autumn Berry.  We’ve gained attention across the state, are finalists for a few awards and competitions on campus, and were featured in the Daily Illini’s BUZZ the other day:

What we do:

We supply high-quality Autumn Berry products in positive, fair-trade, and local ways.  We make products from a problematic invasive tree species that spread across farmlands while restoring this land into highly productive orchards.

Our Autumn Berries are high in nutritional value, containing vitamins A, C, and E, flavonoids and essential fatty acids.  Autumn Berries are exceptionally high in the antioxidant Lycopene.  Lycopene has been associated with the prevention of certain diseases including breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Currently, 85% of dietary lycopene comes from tomatoes.  One serving of our berries has 17 times the amount of lycopene found in an equivalent serving of a tomato.

Try our autumn berry! You can find us at:
-The Big Grove Tavern (Autumn Berry sorbet and steak sauce)
-Blind Pig (Autumn Berry beer)
-Wedge Tequila Bar (Autumn Berry margarita)
-Champaign Common Ground Food Co-op (jam)
-Coming soon...Autumn Berry wine!

Right now, we’re working to spread awareness in our local community and Midwest region.  We’ve received a lot of buy in and support, and believe there’s a big future ahead of us.  To sum it up, please like/share this Facebook page and share this exciting new venture with your friends, family, lovers, etc: http://www.facebook.com/AutumnBerryInspired?fref=ts
THANK YOU!!!

Alma Mater Mayhem

The one where I finally graduated college and my university removed the historical "graduation picture" statue.... For those of you who don't attend U of I, the Alma Mater was removed from campus this year for renovations and repairs.  As graduation approached, we were informed that she would not return in time which caused an uproar, as it's the iconic place to take your picture in a cap and gown.   Got my response!   The letter caught her attention (she CC'd the Dean of the College of Business and the Event Director of the Alumni Association).  We'll see what they plan for this alma mater event.

Bud Light "Born on" Blasphemy

The one where we got tricked into drinking expired beer... I'm not sure if anyone actually reads that little date on the front of a Bud Light case or not.  I finally did for the first time the other day and realized how misleading it is... It must have been the fact that the beer was warm that made me think it was stale.  Even though I was wrong, I wasn't going to give up that easily. And for the win... Free beer and a hat!!!

Chipotle Concern

The one where I convinced my local Chipotle to extend their hours... I don't know where I'd be at in life if it weren't for Chipotle.  If you're not a regular burrito/burrito bowl/even taco salad consumer, then you're not living.  The only thing that I disagree with Chipotle on is their hours of operation.  I sent this one to a lengthy list of people at corporate and word on the street is that it even got looked over by the CEO!  Probably one of my proudest moments in college. And finally....the response I've been waiting for... Jason's the man!  He ended up making a deal with me to open up at 10am for two Saturdays in November.  The first one was a bust.  I made the mistake of staying in the night before the opening and that was when I realized how difficult and painful it is to eat a burrito at 10am when you're perfectly sober.  He decided to make it a little interesting and raised the ...
